In a world that is constantly changing, it is comforting to know there is always a hand willing to reach out to help others in times of crisis. When families feel they have no where to turn, our helping hands offer a balance to lives, warmth to families and a place where they can get a hand up.
We do so much more than just hand out bags of food…..
We are here to help families who are dealing with difficult life circumstances by assisting with food every 30 days. We also have holiday food distribution, backpacks, and a Christmas gift shop for families with children. Bixby Outreach wants to be the “Hand Up”!
Going back to school can be difficult for a child when they have nothing and schools are not in a place where they can help due to budget cuts. We bridge the gap by providing each child with a new backpack. Grade specific school supply items are delivered to local area schools to be distributed as needed During our backpack distribution, we also have a back to school night, called the Backpack Block Party. This fun event is for clients and their families to come enjoy dinner in the park with inflatables, games, etc!
Summer is a particularly difficult time for families who are already struggling to put food on the table. For families facing hunger, the summer months mean increased food and utility costs as they care for children at home. Each child receives a highly nutritious food bag just for them when families come into the BOC for services. In addition to the child food bags we provide a family food bag which consists of extra proteins and foods. Our goal is to offset the potential increase in the family food budget and to make sure that children who normally receive free or reduced meals and snacks through the school don’t have to go hungry during the summer.
In partnership with local schools, families who might struggle with food insecurity during school breaks can receive vouchers for nutritionally balanced food boxes for their children.
For Thanksgiving and Christmas, our clients are provided with all of the items needed to make a complete holiday meal, including the main dish and sides!
Christmas can be a huge financial burden on families, especially those going through hardship. An opportunity for our clients to help offset the cost of Christmas by providing gifts for children (13 & under) in their families. We make sure parents aren’t left out! During our Holly Jolly Holiday Party, the clients’ children pick out and wrap a gift for their parents, in addition to meeting Santa, having cookies and hot cocoa, doing crafts, and more!
For clients who, for medical as well as transportation issues, are unable to come into the BOC to receive monthly food assistance, we provide monthly food delivery. We also provide these services to area assisted living facilities.
Our food pantry provides local families in need with a monthly distribution of perishable and non-perishable foods, toiletries, baby care items, and more. The food pantry is also part of the USDA food program. On average, it costs the BOC about $30 to feed a family of 4 for 1 day. Historically, the BOC provides enough food for a family for 3 meals a day for 3-5 days.
Our mission is to provide opportunities for those we serve to engage in their progress towards stability and sustainability and to create a stronger community through building healthy community members.
